New Plan or New Planner?
As we come to the end of any year we begin to evaluate our progress.
- Was this the year we wanted it to be?
- Are we achieving our goals?
- Are we moving toward what we want?
When people feel stuck they often think a new tool will be the solution. I often hear (and have made ) statements like this …
- I’m buying a new day planner and that will help me get organized!
- I’m going paperless and going to only use the computer!
- I’m getting a new computer – that will help me make more money online!
But a new TOOL is not what everyone needs.
Some need a new plan, not a new planner.
Do you need a new plan or a new planner?
You might need a new plan if you are …
- Unhappy doing the type of work you do.
- Working as hard as you can and achieving few results.
- Confused about how what you are doing is supposed to work.
- Unsure that what you are doing will work at all.
You need a new planner, not a new plan if you are …
- 100% committed to your current plan.
- Convinced that you will succeed given enough time.
- Fully committed to the path you are on.
- Open minded and able to learn from your mistakes.
- In agreement with your spouse about your current direction.
Here are a few guidelines I have found helpful in choosing a new plan, or a new planner.
Find something that fits you
We work more than we do almost anything else. So why not do work that you enjoy, that challenges you and that you find fun?
I will readily admit this is easier said than done, but it can be done.
Just the other day I had a client who was trying to sell a Clickbank product he did not believe in, did not own or use and was not sure was a good product.
I asked him why he was promoting that product.
“I need the money” he answered.
I get that. I’ve been there too and know the feeling. I suspect everyone reading this has been at the place where we need something to happen. We need sales to happen … now!
But what I discovered was interesting. His passion was a completely different topic. When he spoke about this topic his eyes lit up and his entire demeanor changed.
I asked the obvious question “Why not pursue a way to make money with the thing you love?”
He loved the idea. He left my office on cloud 9 because he was pursuing his passion, not trying to make a buck pushing some product he did not believe in or want to sell.
He will still be using Clickbank but this time to sell his own product!
Think about the upcoming year. You are going to spend massive amounts of time working on your online business. Why not make every one of those hours move you toward your passion instead of spending any time at all pursuing anything else?
Use it to its utmost
Whether you get a new plan or a new planner, use it to its fullest. What I mean is this – really explore what it can do and do everything you can using that tool, or plan.
If you have a new plan focus all your attention there.
Don’t be distracted by shiny objects that are not in alignment with that plan. Don’t buy things that don’t move your plan forward. Completely ignore skills that are not part of your plan.
Making a plan work (or a planner) takes laser focus and dedication.
Find those within yourself and use them. They are in all of us, they just need to be developed.
And remember that every “yes” comes at the price of saying “no” when you have to.
Be willing to fail forward
Zig Ziglar said this “A big shot is just a little shot who kept on shooting!” Well said. There is a huge value in persistence and being willing to “do something poorly until you can do it well”
Another Zigism there.
Listen to your heart more than your head
I often talk with clients about passion. Why? Because the Internet provides a unique opportunity. The opportunity to turn your passions into an income.
It really is as simple as that.
No matter what your passion is, there are others who share it. They are on the same passion journey as you are, but in a different place along the path. They can learn from you and you can learn from them.
The wonderful thing about the Internet is how we can connect. From a blog to social media, connecting with like-minded people has never been easier.
And that can help you in business.
Think about this … if your passion was roses in 1917 it was nearly impossible to reach other rose enthusiasts with your message of how to grow roses.
Today you can do that instantly, and almost completely free.
Why would you work in an area that wasn’t your passion?
Whether you need a new plan or a new planner, there are resources to help you. I want to be one of those resources and design my products and free information around that goal.
My goal has been, and remains, helping you go from where you are now to where you want to be in the quickest and easiest way possible.
As another year starts up let me share three keys to success. This is what I teach and what I do.
- Follow your passion.
- Work like today is your last.
- Commit to a process you believe in and learn from your mistakes.
If you do those things I believe this year will be your best year ever.
And that is a beautiful thing indeed!
