The Lesson Of The Conditioner Bottle

The other day I was in the shower enjoying warm water flowing directly from heater and faced a situation we all face at some point. My bottle of conditioner was almost empty and I needed to use the last bit of what remained.
So I did what many of us have done – I turned it over and began to tap the top of the bottle against my palm to get to the conditioner from the bottom of the bottle.
But nothing came out!
So I tapped a little harder. Still nothing.
Determined in my quest to condition, I began banging the bottle against my hand with such force that I darn near bruised my palm. Typical male behavior.
After longer at this than I care to admit I was left with an embarrassing lack of conditioner, a sore hand and an increasing sense that my efforts were in fact futile.
And then it hit me. If I put the bottle back on the shelf upside down time would do what my efforts could not.
All I would have to do it set it up right, give time a chance to do the work for me and the results would surely follow.
When I came back the next day the magic of gravity and time had done its work!
The elusive conditioner had moved as if by magic to the “top” of the bottle. I turned the bottle over, removed the lid, extracted the conditioner and conditioned the few hairs I have remaining. 🙂
So why am I writing this article and why in the world would you care about my story?
Because the lesson of the conditioner bottle affirms a truth that is perhaps the #1 secret to succeeding online. Too strong? Read on and see if you agree with me.
The lesson of the conditioner bottle is this.
When a system is set up right time does the work for you.
Simple, yet powerful, and oh so true.
Here is the most important phrase of all from my little shower story.
“All I would have to do it set it up right, give time a chance to do the work for me and the results would surely follow.“
Take a moment right now and think about the 5 people you consider to be the most successful online.
It might be Frank Kern, Ryan Deiss, Jimmy Brown, Jack Humphrey, Yanik Silver, Jeff Walker or one of many other online marketers. It might not be a big name marketer but someone you admire who is doing their job very well and with integrity.
Got your list? Good.
Now review that list and see if there are any names on it who do not have an automated marketing system.
A way to capture leads
A way to email those leads
A selling funnel that closes the sale
I’m willing to bet that every name on your list is a person who has taken the time to set up an automated marketing system that puts time on their side.
After all, “When a system is set up right time does the work for you.” I live by those words every day. And I encourage you to do the same.
In the coming weeks I’m going to share what good automated marketing looks like, mistakes to automation that you can easily avoid and more.
For now I suggest doing this.
Think about the things you have been trying online that have not been working. Don’t beat yourself up – we have all been there and tried things that have not worked. That’s part of the process.
Now think about this. What if you flipped your marketing upside down?
What if you set up a system, a real and proven system, that would put time on your side?
How would that change your situation?
What would it look like if you became the person who woke up in the morning with new sales orders in your email inbox?
Pie in the sky? Not at all. If I can do it you can do it. And in the coming weeks I’m going to share much more about this with you right here on my blog.
For now start thinking about how we can “flip the bottle” in your online business and then get ready to take the next step.
Thanks for reading. Be well.

Internet marketing feels like planting seeds. You just keep planting those seeds and in time your list, profits, etc. will grow.

That is exactly right. All you can do is plant and water and the harvest will come. As long as you are planting good things, cultivating and feeding properly and watering well the result is assured.

Dear Charlie,
All those Free classified ads I had written I have used Yahoo to advertise those ads and have no
sales as of yet? I am very disappointed and Hurt Inside! I don’t think this is Information Overload but just my selection of a poor advertising source? I believe I truly believe I need your common sense internet marketing for my future success ! However right now I need money to survive and my question is this e-zines that allow P.P.C. can I pay them that price after the advertisement is over? That way I will have the money to do so! If so I could use your C.S.I.M info: to set up my plan for my future!
Thank You Very Much For Just Being There for Me!!

    Hi Thomas,

I’m sorry you are not seeing the results you need. I’m not sure about the effectiveness of Yahoo classifieds as I have not used that method for some time.

I know of no ezine, or any other ad source that is reliable, where they will let you pay after the ad runs. People who sell ads are asked this all the time but they don’t do it because they sell ad space for a living and would never get paid if the ad did not produce. And the ad producing is out of their control.

I am sorry you are needing money to survive. I have been there and when I was there I did work for people for pay, which is how I survived online in the very early days.

I hope things turn around for you quickly.

Hi Charlie! First, I came because of your excellent assistance to a fellow DOE member and a review of his website. As the person maintaining it for him, I slapped myself silly after hearing your suggestions because… I know better (right from left so to speak). I also came to see your enlarged images of your social media (facebook, twitter, etc.) in your right hand column.

However, the title of your article did its job, and yes I obviously clicked to read the rest 🙂

Even after 10+ successful years online, I look forward to your upcoming series. It’s learn, learn, learn and revise, revise, revise as needed. A non-stop process where one should never assume they “know it all.” Keeping an open mind is critical online, along with thinking outside the box.

(As an aside… I did, however, wonder why you didn’t just add a tiny bit of water to the bottle – not enough to dilute it too much but enough to make it immediately usable… LOL!)

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for sharing this. I think a large majority of people suffer with this problem and don’t want to wait for time. I think you hit the nail on the head, so to speak. The only thing that I do see happen sometimes, is that time is not enough on it’s own – we also need to put action into the formula and it then does work most times.

Take care,

Charlie,

This upside down bottle story really puts things into perspective. I have been in the home building industry for over fifty years and have been used to having a job to do and getting in done in short order. Now, when it comes to learning a different industry (online marketing) I want to take a hold of things and get things completed pronto. Well, I have found that it just does not work that way. Then what happens is I get frustrated and think I need to find something different that will move faster. Well, the time has come for me to let the bottle stand upside for a little longer and then proceed. Thanks Charlie for a very inciteful article.

Hi Charlie!

Yup, systems are where it’s at. Whether its systems for industrial automation (which I used to do), systems for getting that last bit of conditioner, or systems for building a loyal fan base through regular Facebook page updates (my latest project), a good system gets result by applying a small amount of effort over time. That’s opposed to applying a large amount over a short amount of time.

No banging on bottles here. 🙂

Hi Charlie

Thanks for your insights – I appreciate being able to learn not only from someone else but also with them. It took ages but I have realised that a lone ranger attitude makes you (me) a hero only in your own eyes and only if you’re successful. It’s also a slow and lonely death if you fail because it can be hard to let go the mentality, which is somewhat what your example hinted at – just seeing things differently.

On the flipside, I have been a life-long economical person, making things last longer than many can, fixing whatever breaks (most stuff really can be repaired) even creating new parts where needed out of whatever comes to hand. In New Zealand we call it the ‘blokes and sheds’ mentaility. Left to our own devices we can improvise pretty well.

Only problem is, every bloke in his shed is probably inventing or re-inventing many of the same things, so individually satisfying, perhaps, but collectively very inefficient. Thus learning from and with others is IMO a better way to do many things. So now I have a squeeze page, OTO autoresponder series and signups pretty much on automatic, courtesy of a marketer who turned off the hype and started talking sense. Most refreshing 🙂

But it took me ages to realise I can also use someone else’s expertise, and to really listen to them. That’s also why I joined DoE – because you have tons of experience, even wisdom, and you make a lot of sense. I should have done it earlier, and also look forward to being able to contribute to the group in some way.

Thanks Charlie

Great getting into Charlie’s brain to see his reasoning process. Try, put more effort in, step back and analyze. Implement and be patient.

This inspired me to use the same technique at our local market with a stack of oranges. After beating them profusely to get orange juice, I thought about it, left them for a day and came back.

Sure enough, they had softened even more and I enjoyed the ‘fresh’ juice. So much so that the security guards got jealous and hauled me away.

On the bright side, I’ve been telling your conditioner story to everyone here at the Riverside County Jail and they all liked it.

Funny how we all do the same stuff. I have had similar experience to yours and in the long run learned to have patience and let things happen as they should.

It is so true that when you have set up a system it works but to make it work you require patience, perseverance and motivation to do it.

My internet endeavour has made me understand that it takes time to build a system. Jumping from one program to another will not make you successful but sticking with one system and getting it right by working on it until it is set properly is the key to success.

Thanks for the great example.

Right on Charlie!

I was killing my self on one particular website, building back links, writing articles, making blog posts, cawing the forums with one thing in mind; BACK LINKS, BACK LINKS, BACK LINKS! All the while trying to put out the best helpful content I was able to give to help someone anyone with the problem they had. Well one day I just burnt-out. I stopped trying son hard, still wrote quality content but not as much.

One day I decided to check my traffic stats after yet another Google change and low- and-behold, my traffic was up over 600% and I started making sales! with this new traffic I saw a trend, my visitors were telling me what they wanted to see and read, a minor adjustment and I was able to increase my traffic even a bit more.

My point is; some time you have to put the pot on low and just let it simmer to really get the juices to flow. Quality and patients in = quality out, crap in = crap out!

Thanks charlie, love reading your stuff!

Hi Charlie;
I am a fairly new member of Directory of eZines 2.0. I look forward to reading more about getting automated traffic. Your approach to your subscribers is unbelievably refreshing. I have a question regarding traffic generation products. I am still fairly new to a lot of this but I also know there is a lot of bad stuff out there too. I was on a webinar last night and of course it was the next installment of the “greatest thing ever” for traffic generation. I am spending too much time listening to the hype when I know I need to generate a list. Will your future recommendations address this? Also, where should I be looking for help right now? Thanks Charlie, I don’t know you personally, but I feel like I’ve known you for a long time the way you treat your readers!

    Ray,

My future articles and videos will touch on this. I’m a believer in the Vince Lombardi method (which gives away my age!) of doing the basic things very well and then moving on to more advanced techniques if necessary. For example, I speak with people every week who are attending webinars and promoting $2000 products (or trying to) before they have mastered the basics like list building and article marketing. I feel that is a mistake for most people, which is why I put so much content and learning in each one of my sites.

Learn how to market online and you will be able to market any product. Learn to build automated systems and you will be able to market any product and have free time too. Simple. It really does all start with list building. That is the #1 focus.

To be able to suggest where you should be looking for help right now without knowing your individual situation would be a mistake for us both. I can say generally however that list building, article marketing, social media and building relationships with a blog have worked well for a very long time and will continue to work well for a very long time.

If a person did nothing but these things and did them very well they would succeed beyond their wildest dreams in my opinion.

We all talk about “traffic” but traffic only means people visiting our websites. The key word here is people. When you treat people with respect and help them succeed they will help you succeed. The old saying of getting what you want by helping others get what they want has never been more needed than in the shark-infested waters of the Internet.

Find a way to serve others and your reward will surely come.

    Hope this helps.

    Charlie

Greetings Mr. Page from still cold Eastern Canada. My name is Michael, mid 50’s, and have been studying IM for a few years. Great analogy of the conditioner bottle — in fact, I do that all the time by turning it (and other things, like dish soap) to get it ALL out! And, MY hair has decided to take a bit of a vacation lately too…*s
“Charlie Page” is definitely one of my fave marketers, because of his simplistic operational style and the fact that he instills a sense of trust, which is pivotal in IM. IM is a BUSINESS and it takes time to learn this business as you would any other.
I get a LOT of email from many marketers, many “opportunities” to buy into, etc. Truth is, I haven’t bought ANY of them, because of due diligence and paying attention to the red flags. I am still learning but have the sub-structures in place with realizing the importance of list building, auto responders, and trust/branding, etc. All the tools of the trade.
So, I will continue to open “Charlie’s” emails (as opposed to many of the others) and I will continue to learn, and with God’s guidance, I WILL succeed.
Sigh…might have to move to Texas to get rid of this darn cold and snow…getting too old to shovel and all of this. *s

Like you say, forcing something to work (or not as the case may be) is the fastest way to frustration and burnout. I always encourage my clients to get the basics right, and systemize wherever possible – let time do the heavy lifting – so that something can be measured, and tweaked, and success becomes repaeatable.
I love your ethos of giving good content, and avoiding the shiny objects distraction.

Hi Charlie,

There you go again using a simple example to make a major, serious, exacting point to the most basic integral piece of the IM puzzle. Like you, I thrive with simplicity. I don’t need complicated, convoluted, complex explanations, answers and theories. I’m not Einstein and I don’t care to deal with the Einstein types. You break it down to its simplest, easiest, sequential terms that are easily understood, digested and retained. By the way, I’ve got the conditioner bottle thing down, and have for years. It’s the internet thing that’s my conditioner bottle.

So, I look to you to show me how to turn this internet thing upside down so I can get to what’s inside and do a lot of rinsing and repeating.

Thanks for all your great advice,

A.Smith

This article is why after two years of following numerous IM’ters I have eliminated all but two. I have no less than 50 saved emails from Mr. Page that I review from time to time and WILL be a member of DOE soon I hope. presently unemployed but working on it and will continue to learn what I can. Thanks for your honesty and emails.

Hey,
Did u ever consider adding a little water to the bottle? What is the lesson now?

Reply
    Charlie Page

The lesson now would be to look beyond the obvious for the deeper meaning. The article was not about getting conditioner out of a bottle. It was about much more than that. I think the reason so many people fall for so many hyped up offers online (I have too) is the we forget to look below the surface for the real meaning.

Great article, Charlie. I thought the conditioner bottle served as a great analogy.

@Fyne Nene: Charlie is a top-notch guy with tremendous integrity. You would do well to give him a chance.

@Everyone who thinks Charlie should have diluted the remaining conditioner with water: Give me a break! Charlie just wanted to treat his remaining hairs with only the finest conditioner, not some watered-down inferior treatment. He wanted his hairs to be fully conditioned, not somewhat conditioned. Ha ha. Am I right, Charlie?

Charlie, that is so cool how you can take a problem evaluate and solve it, then relate it
to your business and find solutions for it. That take’s a lot of experience knowledge and
understanding. I can see why you are so successful in what you do. Be looking for your

Hey Charlie, while reading your story, I had a great “ah ha” moment. It seems that I’m still tapping the bottom of the bottle. I just got my new website at the SEO 100% position in my Optimizer. I am so proud though, because It took me lots of man hours and money to accomplish this. I need to know how to properly market the programs that I’m connected to before I feel relaxed enough to connect to your others.

I would love to hear what you think of my sites content. And, what you feel is missing.

Thank you Charlie for the good laugh and reminder that Rome was not built in a day. Often times people forget that you have to learn to walk before you can run, and in much the same way as letting gravity do its job with the conditioner, so is having the patience to see your goals achieved from your efforts. Looking forward to more trusted guidance…

Hi Charlie, great analogy, that apply to most of us especially us newbies, who are inexperinced and want to see results instantly or else things are just “not working”,when a farmer plants the seed they know from experince that it will take a time for seeds to grow, they are not trying to dig and keep checking each day, what is going on,if they do that they would kill the proces of seeds growing.First thing first, one need first to plant seed in fertile soil, and take care of it,water it regularly and let nature do the rest,as it most of the time do perfectly without our constant interfirence…love your life wisdom, which only can come from life experince.Just wonder if any of your reader is from Canada,Brampton area,I would like to conect with some of them if they are out there, thanks.Ivan

However, I doubt If you will be much different than the rest of them, I hope you don’t take this personal. I’m sure you will agree with me that internet marketing has become a legalise platform for criminals and frustas to operate with impunity and get away with It. It’s difficult to know who to believe any more hope some measures will be put in place to make internet marketers accountable. It seems you have built a good reputation in this business. Wow – that is a big bundle of skepticism there. I can understand that you are skeptical but knowing who to trust is really quite easy. Watch what they do more than what they say and watch them do the right things over a long period of time.

And really try to watch what you say to people. We are all very real people online and comments like “I doubt If you will be much different than the rest of them” do hurt and are unwarranted.

I think this is some of the best advice I have heard in a long time. It seems that everyone is looking for that EASY button like the one in the commercial. Push the button and make a million dollars.

Marketing is simple but it is not always easy.

You are right, all it takes is some effort and Time.

Hi Charlie,

The lesson of the conditioner bottle is interesting. The problem is that the people of today want it now or never.
But,Iam lucky because my father infused in me the fact that slow but steady wins the race! and that there is nothing more powerful than a made up mind.Iam decided.

Have a great day!
Cheers!

Charlie, if you had any smarts you would have put some water in the bottle. The conditioner would flow easy and you could have had your conditioning immediately.

I am happy that after a long try you finally figured out to turn the bottle upside down and conditioned the next day however, you could have also put a little water in the bottle and condition the same day. We learn by experience.

It was a nice experience

The article wasn’t so much about the conditioner as the condition of most people’s marketing systems. But thanks for the tip.

Super Charlie… I was just writing a chapter on my upcoming book ‘Funding your million dollar idea’ and I spoke about the ‘System’. this fit rights into it. and I take it a bit further, having such a system is what creates wealth, and it shifts the paradigm that someone has to lose for us to win.

You rock 🙂

I did the same thing with my bottle of shampoo last week. When it really ran out, I rummaged through my draw for a little, hotel shampoo bottle, but now I am finally going to make the trip to the store to buy a new one.

Thanks for pointing out the good advice about automated systems,

I am wondering if Charlie still thinks article marketing is a great idea, now that Google has shot down the article aggregation websites (“content farms”) like ezinearticles.com via its algorithm change.

Reply

    Joe,

I do very much believe that article marketing is an excellent and free way to market online. You are responding here to … wait for it … an article. 🙂

People love articles and always have. I believe they always will. It’s how we learn. I respectfully disagree with your characterization of Ezine Articles as a content farm however. They serve a vital role for online marketers and I feel strongly that they will make the adjustments necessary to regain their standing.

    Thank you for commenting.
