What Is Traffic & How Do I Get Some?

When it comes to making money online there are three elements that everyone MUST have in order to succeed:

1 — Something to sell
2 — A website that makes the sale
3 — People coming to that site and buying

Getting items 1 and 2 set up and in place are as easy as pie. In fact, you can have these in place in the next 10 minutes.

But it’s that third element, getting real people to come to your site and buy something, that has most people stumped.

Getting visitors to your site is called, in Internet terms, getting traffic. And there is no other topic on which so much is written, and so much is wrong.

Being a fairly simple minded fellow, I like to keep things simple and easy to understand. In that light, here are some thoughts on understanding, and getting, traffic.

FIRST THINGS FIRST…

There are basically two types of traffic:

What this means is that you are going to have to pay for traffic through either your efforts (free traffic) or your pocketbook (paid traffic).

Everybody pays… some with time, others with money. I’m sure by now you know that the “three click” wonders don’t work for anyone … except the people selling them!

So there is paid traffic and free traffic. Nothing more. Nothing less. Let’s look at each and see how they work.

In this post I’m going to touch on free traffic. In future posts (there are a few parts to this series) I will dig deeper into both free and paid methods, including what’s working now. First, an overview of free traffic methods that actually work, and some to avoid.

Free Traffic Methods That Work

If ever there was a siren song of the digital age, ‘free traffic’ is it.

Can you really get absolutely free traffic to your site? Sure.

Can you build a business based on this traffic? Yes.

BUT – and there is always a but – you will have to learn how to get it and work hard as well. If that’s okay with you, let’s look at how it works.

Here are the main sources of free traffic, along with a word about each…

SEARCH ENGINES

Often touted as the #1 way to get free traffic, the tactic here is to get your site listed in the venerated ‘top ten’ search results. You can’t trick the search engines, like Google, so the best way to do this is to provide content, and lots of it.

If your site is helpful to human readers you will do well.

If you try and outsmart the search engines to get traffic you will go broke buying the latest and greatest thingy that simply won’t work, or won’t work long.

Create a content rich site and the search engines will reward you by displaying that site when people search for the type of information you provide. But the content must be high quality and must be original. No rehashed PLR content for you. That will only get you banned, busted and begging for mercy, but you could start your own search company, get your Search Engine Startup going today so you can see results from Google search.

FREE ADS

Free ads are a mixed blessing. They are free, which is good. They usually don’t work, which is bad.

If you can get a free ad in a place where ads are usually sold, like the free ad you get for subscribing to some ezines or classified ad sites that are visited by people, then it might be worth the time.

BUT – ad blasters and automated submitters do not work in testing and are to be avoided.

 ARTICLES

Without a doubt, marketing with articles is the #1 free traffic method. You don’t need to be Hemmingway to do this.

All you have to do is write a short article – about 500 words works best – that describes a problem people face and also provides ways to solve that problem.

HOT TIP: Have you been frustrated in your efforts to get an online business started and making profits? Have you learned from that experience? If so, that makes great article material. See, you really do have something to say!

Once your article is written, you can submit it to article directories, ezines, other website owners, and more to get the widest possible distribution.

Write and submit an article a week and very soon you will get very interested visitors who are proven to buy.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

How long have you been trying to make money online? What if you had written only one article a week during that time? For many reading this it would mean an inventory of 100 articles or more. And that is a large enough inventory of articles to make many many sales! Put time on your side by writing articles every week, and more often if you can.

VIRAL MARKETING

Viral marketing basically means creating something of value that others can give away while making sure you benefit from it being given away.

The key here is that you both win when the product is given freely.

In most cases, the person who gives the book away for you wins by providing good information that they don’t have to write.

You win because the product contains links back to your site.

A real win-win!

The most common form of this is either software or a short e-book or report.

Creating a viral marketing e-book is a win-win situation. You win because the links in the product are yours, so you get paid when people click. Readers win because you provide valuable information and they can give the booklet free from their website.

PUBLISH AN EZINE

Publishing an ezine is highly profitable and easy to do. All you need to do is gather, or write, articles about a specific subject and publish an ezine (like the one you are reading now) on a schedule. That might mean every week, or every month.

You can get great articles from all sorts of places, like article directories or ezine directories.

Publish an ezine, offer it to everyone in your address book and who visits your site, and watch your traffic grow.

PUBLISH A BLOG

This is super easy today. If you have a hosting account, the chances are you have blogging software on that account free. Installing WordPress is a snap and something many hosting companies make possible with one click. Especially if your hosting company uses CPanel.

The basic idea here is the same as a website … provide great content and the search  engines send people.

The advantage to a blog is that you can have some interactivity by letting people comment, and you can easily structure your blog for easy reading. Plus you can offer an RSS feed for those who prefer that method of getting content automatically.

Set up a blog today, provide great content, and the search engines will send traffic over time.

PARTICIPATE ON FORUMS

This is an excellent, and free, way to earn while you learn. The idea here is to visit forums that are specific to your site and post questions or make comments.

This works well if you understand reciprocity and are wiling to give a bit before you receive. It does not work at all if your forum post is simply an ad in disguise.

Once forum members get to know and trust you a bit they will visit the site you list in your signature area. If you visit the forums specific to your topic of interest and get involved, you will get very targeted free traffic on a steady basis. I know of one major marketer who built his reputation using this method more than any others. This works!

As you can see, there are many ways to get free traffic to your site. These methods take time that could be spent doing other things.

But if you have more time than money at this point in your life, these techniques will work to get traffic to your site.

I hope they work for you too.

Soon we will look at even MORE ways to get traffic free — so stayed tuned!

Thanks!

First of all this was a very good article I did enjoy reading it.
As far as traffic goes my number 1 method is social media
the biggest one being Face book, I also use Twitter, Linkedin
and Pinterest, I have tried safe lists and traffic exchanges
and have had very little success with them. Although I have learned
how to make websites and blogs today I find both of these methods
to be obsolete, I totally think the best way to do this is to make
fanpages on Facebook, Another thing I see no need for is domain names, I now totally use Bit.ly url shortner because I can customize the url to what ever I choose to. Another form of free or very inexpensive traffic is classifieds such as Craigslist or Backpage. Although I am getting some results with people signing up with my programs I still have a way to go before I will be making a decent living at this.

    • Charlie Page says:

Thank you for your feedback. When it comes to traffic there are quantity choices and quality choices. The problem I’ve always faced with things like Craigslist is a quality one. Facebook can create some very powerful results. I look forward to hearing from you again with updates.

      Thanks again!

  • I have gotten so frustrated that many times I didn’t even want to turn my computer on. As you mentioned I have spent more money on dreams than anything else. I have been a member of yours for a few years and the truth is for awhile I no longer paid too much attention to your site. A few years later still struggling to make a dime online to first person that I thought about, was you, and your site. I always knew that you were up front and honest and now after, I don’t even know how much money I spent, if I am going to make it online, I truly feel you are the only one who can help me get there. Thank you for probably being one of the very few professionals who does care more about the people than the money.

Thank you for all this free traffic information Charlie. I have been following you for awhile and trust your opinion. I haven’t been into article marketing because I have read that it’s a waste of time, but will for sure try it since you say it’s a good source of traffic. I have tried some of the other methods and do get some traffic from them. It’s staying consistent that’s the hard part of all of it.

Hi Charlie great article, can you tell me is it possible to put a squeeze page on my wordpress site. I have asked many other people and have always been told it`s not possible.
    Thanks Charlie 🙂

    • Charlie Page says:

It is totally possible but depends, to some extent, on which theme you are using. For a great theme that offers built in squeeze pages try Optimize Press. You can do everything with OP you would do with any other theme but it has pre-configured squeeze pages that operate like any other WordPress page. You can even make the squeeze your home page if you want. Another option is Socrates Theme. If you don’t want to change themes you can get a landing page plug in to create the squeeze. I use and like a product called Premise from Studio Press.

      Hope this helps.

Charlie, Im A life time member and ive been shy to ask but I cant set up a sqeeze page or a website or blog ive been on the internet three years and have learnd a lot of things not to do spent lots of money and I know you know the rest. im know the internet , but not the computer too well can you help me out of this mess. thank you

    • Charlie Page says:

      Anthony,

Thank you for being a member. I’m sorry I can’t create a squeeze page for you as a DOE member. It’s just not what we do at DOE. It is what we do at Follow Up Selling Systems but there’s no need to join there for just a squeeze page.

If you have hosting the easiest way to get a squeeze page going is to have your hosting company set up WordPress and then buy a product called Optimize Press. As I recall they will install it for you. After that it’s super-easy to create squeeze pages.

Another option – and one I have used for years – is a site called Marketing Makeover Generator. Here is a link to their page. They actually allow you to build the page by logging in and filling in some basic information. They host the page and everything.

I did have a service that did this (Squeeze Page Today) but that is only available to Follow Up Selling Systems members now as part of our new marketing programs.

I like the Optimize Press route best but either of the two options I offered will work well.

My site is retail bird supplies.
In Dec 2011 paid $5000 in advance for 5K to 6k of “Qualified Hits” per month to my website that opened in November 2011. All it has given me is garbage. A bounce rate of 98.5% and nothing to show for my money.
Now I am doing banner ads on a Bird Channel internet site related to Bird Talk magazine. Too soon to say if that is working.
I have done articles on Ezine etc, directory submissions etc.
So far my sales are only $30. Very frustrated, don’t know what to do next.

    • Charlie Page says:

I’ve seen many sites like yours and it is candidly hard to make money with them. It’s a retail site where people can buy products but unless you are optimizing for a buying crowd vs. a “get more information” crowd it’s going to be hard going. I visited the blog but only found 1 article. My advice, at first blush, would be to populate the blog with high-quality original content that will draw visitors from search engines. Let them get the content and then try to sell them something. Another idea – write a short report about birds and give that away in exchange for their subscribing and then offer them special deals via email. As it stands now, you are competing with every other retail site online on price alone. Unless you have a price that is considerably lower than everyone else that’s going to be a hard sell.

      • Theresa Lepiane says:

I have found that some of the daily local coupons work well to get traffic to your site. (We have a local consignment store) But a favorite for me is Amazon.com 50% off diapers with my coupon (subscribe to my newsletter–get the coupon–thanks Charlie) and when you become an “Amazon Mom”
Everybody saves and being an affiliate of Amazon has let me give away something good while making me money rather than costing. This works for me at http://atwoyearold.com

….Maybe link to some related bird books??? It’s not hard to set up an Amazon affiliate and put the banner or widget on your site.
        Good Luck!

Great content as usual Charlie. Thanks for taking the time to create this and also for the poll to find out what we all need the most. The free traffic may take more time and energy than buying ad space, but the persistence pays off and those who are not great writers are getting valuable practice in the bargain.

    Patiently waiting for art 2.

  • Steven Graham says:

I would love to give away a free ebook from my website, but it is an affiliate website that I cannot copy & paste any html code to in order to automate the process. All I wish in exchange for giving away the ebook of course, is their name & email, so I can build a list. How would I accomplish this? The other website I have that I would also like to do this from is a WordPress website. Would that be easier to set this up at?? Thanks, Charlie!

    • Charlie Page says:

For the WordPress site you will want to check out Optimize Press. You use it as your theme and it lets you do list building easily. Another option is a list building widget such as Aweber provides. As to the site you can’t change, check out http://bz9.com They have a solution that will work.

    • Bob E Olson says:

      Steven

If you have an Aweber account, you can set up your auto responder with an email to your list, or new optins, giving them the free ebook. Also, as Charlie pointed out , you can word press to create a non-replicated site tthat will allow you to advertise and give away whatever you have to offer.

      • Charlie Page says:

Bear in mind that if you use the email subscribe option with Aweber they force double opt-in. I’m all for verified (or double) opt in but not so much for being forced to use it. Still, rules are rules and you need to know them before choosing the email opt-in method.

  • Sheila Hall says:

    Charlie …

This article is so enlightening! Still, I’m a bit foggy on one point you make. I’m not familiar with “Viral Marketing” so I don’t want to make incorrect assumptions. I understand that “the links in the product” would me mine. “So you get paid when people click” … is not clear to me. Is this a “Pay Per Click” feature or should I understand that I get paid when people “Click and Buy” … from my links? As always, Charlie, I appreciate your generosity … and in this case – your patience. Shalom!

    • Charlie Page says:

You would be paid when people click and buy. Another option is to make the links in the book go to a squeeze page so you can build your list.

      • Sheila Hall says:

Thanks, Charlie … one final point. Publishing an eZine really appeals to me. As owner of the DOE, I’m interested in knowing how you choose an eZine for included in your Directory. What criteria do you look for in an eZine under consideration? What would an “emerging” eZine need to achieve to catch your eye? How important is the longevity of the eZine versus its subscriber base? Thanks much. Shalom!

      • Charlie Page says:

Good questions. For many years we have let publishers list their ezine information, and update is as well. That is changing with the new DOE. The ezines we list in the new DOE will be ezines we have checked out ourselves so we can know (as much as anyone can know) that they are legitimate, they publish regularly (we subscribe to them all) and they sell ads and their ad prices and circulation are clearly listed. All that said, we require an ezine to have a certain number of subscribers, that they communicate clearly what they offer and that they respond to our email messages. There are a few other criteria but basically a publisher needs to be a real publisher (not a safe list) must sell ads or accept articles or accept joint ventures and must communicate with us about what they offer.

We also are buying ads in all the ezines but this takes time and considerable money so we do this every week to cover the entire list.

  • david says:

Thanks Charlie for the wonderful advice. I am currently out of work ,and have turned to the internet
as a means of earning an extra income. Your advice is timely for me , as I dont have any money to
    spend on advertising.

Secondly , I had a dream last night about how to build lists and sell product online. What you said
about viral and recipriosity rings true. If you give away a free product that can benefit others it will
come back to you . Its all about building a raport with your customers so they build a trust and
respect for you and your product or service. Thanks and I hope readers find this ties in with what you
    are saying.

  • Deborah Schultz says:

  • Viola says:

As usual great tips from Charlie. Free traffic is great but takes a lot longer to see results. Of course then those results are more longterm and stable then the paid traffic that dies as soon as you feed it money.

    Thanks

    Viola

I thought about writing articles for ezine directories more than just a few times before. I enjoy writing for my blog and ezine articles frankly sounds like another fun challenge.

But I just don’t understand how it would drive traffic my blog. Is there that many people visiting ezine sites every day looking for articles to post on their own blogs?

    • Charlie Page says:

The key here is search engines. When you put high quality content on article directories the search engines find that and rank the site, and the page where your article is displayed more highly. When people search for the keywords in your article then the article is found. When the article is read, and enjoyed, people will visit the site in your resource box and you will get traffic.

  • Rambha says:

    Thanks Charlie,
    This article was helpful.

  • Susan says:

I got a lot out of this. I am doing fairly well with my site considering my product is new and people in the marketplace are not really searching for it in large numbers yet, but I do get a steady number of sales. Viral marketing and ezines make a lot of sense for me and I will put some attention on them. What frustrates me is how competing sites with poor content, less content, few links and even Latin dummy text on some pages can sometimes place before my site in search results… I don’t get that. I will also think about some giveaway items. You have been bookmarked!

    • Charlie Page says:

If you keep providing high quality original content you will win over time. The sites you are talking about are probably tricking the search engines into providing short term results. Such sites are penalized and banned when updates occur. Sites that provide high value original content are not. Stick with it and you will win over time.

the blog … it is http://bit.ly/ngofrcharliepage

  • V Sridhar says:

Quite an interesting article. I could relate myself into whatever you were saying. I have burnt lot of money online but have not made a pie over the last six months of my efforts. If only I had followed the article writing technique, perhaps by now I could have seen something, as you have rightly pointed out in your post. I now feel, it is better late than never. There are few sites which appears so truthful but once you get inside after payment, you realize it is a scam site.

Can I mention the names of the sites where I have been duped ? Is this permitted in a blog comment of this kind ? Or can I post a blog myself independently giving out such information. Will this be useful to the new internet entrants ? Pls advise.

  • Troy says:

Nice article Charlie! Yes, I agree with you that all of these strategies work very well. The main problem is that people just don’t have the time or they just plain won’t do it. The biggest misconception about making money online is that it is still work. Hope to hear more from you soon!

If they let me know they are members of DOE, I will give them 10% extra goods for Free.

    Hi Charlie,
I agree and follow those methods myself. I have found that there really is no such thing as free traffic though. It takes a lot of time to get that traffic, and my time is definitely not free. But I have used several of those methods, some with limited success, others with good success. Don’t forget yahoo answers – takes time but if your answer is the best you will get a lot of good targeted traffic from it.
    all the best,

  • Hi Charlie,
    awesome article once more.
It’s always wise to combine free and paid traffic-generation tactics.
I recommend utilizing ad swaps, Twitter and Facebook Page.
    Best of luck!

  • Since money is tight, I’ve been trying some free sources. Have had some success using credit safelists to build a list. Use a short message and send traffic to splash which redirects to lead capture or just a lead capture above the fold. Over 500 subscribers so far. Am focusing now on some article marketing to see how that works.

    • Charlie Page says:

I would focus too on being in touch with people on that list. A list can go cold very quickly if you are not communicating with them and offering to help them and discovering what they need so you can help them get it.

  • Free Electricity says:

Thank you Charlie for another good article.

There is nothing blatantly new in what you discuss, except that you have added in your experience of what works better and what does not work. I notice also that you left out bookmarking and video marketing on youtube (and other video sites). Perhaps you consider these to be on the paid list, due to using paid submission software?

Thanks again for your time and effort to educate those less fortunate than yourself.

    Hi Charlie,

You’ve provided an excellent article with many practical ideas for getting free traffic. I especially appreciate the article writing info. Using this method does work, but one has to work it by putting together good original content. Also good is the info about ezines and blogs, which provide two great ideas for a growing traffic flow.

Thank you for these great ideas.

Well this is a start, as it answers where to go fo traffic, but does not answer how to do so, so follow sources would be good( devil is in the details) Thank you.

  • Walter Dhlamini says:

    Charlie,
Your article is inspiring,I spent a lot of money trying to find a software that will help me drive traffic to my website but to no success. They have both a hidden and a bublic price tag, when you buy with the price you see, another screen will pop up and prompt you to continue with step 2 in order to finalize your order.Everyone regard himself or herself as the best but ones the money is in their banks, they forget about you.

  • Viola says:

Thank you for the great advice Charlie.

The funny thing is that I know most of the things you mentioned and I have even done most of them BUT my downfall is lack of consistency. Reading your article reminded me of that and I thank you for it. I guess every now and then I need somebody to show me the way…..so to speak.

  • Roger says:

I have to agree with you about the free ads as they don’t seem to help much. Whenever traffic does come from those free ads it just isn’t targeted well enough to convert. One great and simple way to get leads that may potentially convert is commenting through blogs within your same niche. After all when people visit a blog and read through the post they are in some respect interested. If your website is within a similar niche you have a very good chance of gaining a new blog reader that may convert at some point, or better yet become a lifetime customer.

  • sus says:

Hi charlie, thanks for the great post. I’ve been getting emails from those affiliates trying to sell their push button get traffic thingy but like u mentioned nothing beats writing good quality content and let google find you. The other thing is the social bookmarking. Look fwd for your next post. Tq

Charlie, this is a good article, especially being simple. When most people give advice or write an article, its where they are at the moment, but must remember everyone especially,a newbie like me.Looking forward to your other articles of traffic. If you can in your next article, mention those or the names of where to obtain information from the article directories and ezine directories. Thanks Theodore Seavers.

  • Darren says:

Great info and wise insights as always Charlie.

I would like to add one more source of free traffic to the discussion…

Social media sites like Facebook. twitter, and LinkedIn and even YouTube are great ways to generate traffic that can be funneled to your blog or website… these sites can create traffic in a viral way if done correctly with a little bit of effort.

Looking forward to part 2 of your series

    Thanks,
    Darren

    Hi Charlie,

What a great article. The issue of getting traffic to one’s site is one of the most difficult undertakings an Internet marketer is confronted with daily.

As we all know, free methods takes time hence a lot of marketers fall into the trap of trying to trick the SE by using 3 click softwares!

Looking forward to the article on paid traffic.

For some time I have followed your advice and kinda lost you for a couple of years. But in reuniting with you and your always-sensible information, I am going to re-think the article marketing thing!!

I pretty much thought it was a dead traffic source…but I have taken your advice in the past, so it time to do it again.

I’ll be back in-touch if it doesn’t work!! Thanks

  • Denis says:

Hi Charlie, I’ve been trying and trying to get this started for almost 11 years, but all I have been doing is buying programs after program and just burned out from all the reading they say to read that I am burned out and so confused with everything. So many people say it is easy and that it only takes you 5 minutes a day but me I tried reading so many hours those e-books and other material and sent so many emails and wrote so many articles and still never made any profit from any of the programs that I have and I have almost 52 programs and have a web site and hosting with a good company but still after the first 6 months have not made a cent. Charlie, If you want to see my site that I made and give me advice then my address is http://www.denisgsplace.com and just take that web address off for your comment so others do not see this so it will not bother your comment. at my site if you want to contact me you will see my contact on top.
Will wait for your advice, thank you.
PS: Love the way your leave a comment shows you when your spelling is wrong so you can fix it before you send it to you Charlie. Nice workmanship.

Thank you so much charlie for sharing this, I’ve learned
A lot. I do have a question about article marketing.

I’m really interested in writing an article every week, but
I’m not that genious, so how do I outsource it right and
find someone to do it for me, in any niche (every week)?

  • Luther Wood says:

    Charlie,

I read everything you write. I like your honest straight-forward style.

Thank you for the “Driving Traffic” article. Traffic is still the biggest mystery to me. I have four good niche websites but I have never been able to get traffic to them. I will definately start using your suggestions. When I make my first sale I will screem “YES!” to top of my voice and praise Charlie and PTL…

  • Jim says:

    Mr. Page,
Have been on your mailing list for several months and thank you for the great tips you’ve sent. So far, the most successful method I’ve found for traffic is Social Bookmarking Sites such as StumbleUpon or Reddit. Articles and Forums have brought me some small amount of traffic but nothing to compare with the bookmarking sites.

  • Loren A. Morris says:

    Mr. Page

I Loren A. Morris have sined up for your Ezine Traffic Book a few times. But sadly I have
never recieved it . I’ll be glad to pay for it. Or, if it’s free that makes it a bigger blessing.
could you please send me information on how I can obtain it.
Point number two, and every bit as important, could you please send me imformation on (YOUR) system on internet advertizing. There have been times in past when you’ve doc-
umented how you could take a beginner like me and teach him how to be successful on internet advertizing starting from scratch on a shoe string butget. You see, I like your
frankness and genuiness especially when dealing with all those get rich quick schemes.
So if you could be so inclined, I really would appreciate your advice and information on this.
And again, starting with meager means.

Thankyou so much for your consideration Sincerily Loren A. Morris

  • Zack Lim says:

    Hi Charlie,

Thank you for writing this great blog post.

I agree with you that there is no such thing as “Free” traffic as we will either need to invest our time or money in order to drive targeted traffic to our website.

Personally, I feel that the best approach is to focus on mastering one traffic generation method at a time as this is the best way to prevent suffering from information overload.

Looking forward to part 2 of the article.

    Zack

  • Marilyn says:

Thanks Charlie, great information as usual, I have done most of the above, however I have not made much money at all on line, although, I did do my share of writing ….I have always know it was in the Traffic, so I joined Traffic Evolution recently, they have great learning materials. So do you, and I will definitely start using them! Thanks for this publication, traffic is that important!

  • Biztoptech says:

Excellent article and so true in many aspects. I like how you mention it costs to get traffic, free or otherwise. Time is a commodity. Thanks for the reminder on how to get the best free traffic.

  • Alan Orlandi says:

    You forgot “pinging” and “broadcasting.”

  • Sean Smith says:

Thank you for simplifying all this stuff, Charlie. My question is about article marketing. After writing an article, should we submit it to as many directory sites as possible? Or will we get busted or ‘dinged’ at all by submitting the same content in numerous places? This has always been a sticking point for me.

    Thanks again!
    Sean

    • Charlie Page says:

      Sean,

I submit exactly the same article to all the article sources I use except Ezine Articles.com. They prefer an original version so I edit my article a bit for them. If the “duplicate content penalty” meant that every piece of content had to be 100% unique then only one website would be able to display stock quotes or sports scores. I’m no SEO expert but that’s my take.

      Charlie
