A great man passes

Today one of my personal heroes passed away.

Although I never met him, Zig Ziglar has had more impact on my life than any other person save my wife and family.

I have read, listened to and watched almost everything Zig produced, and am a better salesman, businessman, husband, father and person for having taken the time to read Zig’s work.

Just recently I wrote about the DBV Time Management method. I learned that from Zig’s tapes and use it every day.

Far more than just teaching selling skills, Zig taught about life. How to live. How to love. How to leave a legacy.

And what a legacy Zig has left!

Because Zig was wise enough to publish, generations to come will be blessed by listening to Zig’s common sense wisdom and practical teachings.

Here is the statement the family sent today, including links to Zig’s Facebook page.

— Begin family statement —

Zig Ziglar passed from this world today after a short bout with pneumonia. Though his time on earth has ended, he is speaking with Jesus now in his heavenly home. The angels in heaven are rejoicing and his family is celebrating a life well lived.

If Zig has impacted your life or you want to leave a message to the family, please leave your remarks on his FaceBook page. Don’t worry about being too specific or long. Take as much space as you want…the family wants to know. Please check back on FaceBook as we will be posting when the memorial service will be held.

— End family statement —

I could write about Zig all day, but I won’t do that here. Frankly, I’m fighting tears to write this much.

I was able to leave a comment on Facebook however, and hope you find time to do so as well.

So let me simply say this – if you have not read, watched or listened to Zig before let me strongly encourage you to visit his site right now and get started.

Visit Zig’s site by clicking here

If you are not sure where to start let me suggest Zig’s last book Born to Win. It sums up what Zig taught all his life.

His books should be available on Amazon or at your local bookstore.

I guarantee you this – if you read Zig’s work you will be better off for it.

  3. Like you Charlie, Zig Ziglar has a positive impact in my life too. I first learned about his while I was in Amway, about ten years ago.

His books, classes, audio presentations and videos helped me immensely. I learned how to sell, how to have a good attitude and how to set goals.

RIP Zig Ziglar. You will be greatly missed.

  4. Hey Charlie,
I’ve listened to him also and learned, truly a great in the motivational
speaking field, I’m sure he will be missed by all. Charlie you never
cease to amaze me with your caring of others. Hang in there, I hope
some day I get to meet you then I can say I knew and met another
that was like these great ones.
    Keep up the good work.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I’m going to arrange some meeting opportunities for members in 2013. Really look forward to that.

  5. Unique in every way whether it be his initials of ZZ or his impact on the world and humanity. He has taught everyone a lot and given a lot of value over the many decades. RIP Zig

  6. I first heard Zig Ziglier in the 1970’s. At that time I bought a course by Dennis Waitley called A Course In Winning. I liked the stories that Zig Zigler told and they were inspiring. I listened to them over and over and it helped me a lot while I was starting my career in electronics. That career lasted me for 30 years with one of the best companies around called Beckman Instruments. I also had the pleasure of reading and meeting the founder Dr. A.O.Beckman, the founder of the company. I know how you feel because he too made you feel inspired to be your best with the company and it showed. He gave you the feeling that you can accomplish anything if you put your mind and goals together. It was one of the saddest days for me and the whole company when he past on. It is also today another one of my saddest days to hear that Zig is now gone. He will surly be missed in my heart. I’m going to dig up those tapes now and listen to him again, since it’s been a long time! If anyone wants to read about another great man, look up Dr. A.O.Beckman, the inventer of the PH meter! These are 2 great men that help shape my life. My condolences go out to Zig’s family and may God bless a great man.

  7. Thanks Charlie,
What people don’t always realize is that the foundations laid by pioneers like Zig Ziglar contribute to the prosperity of generations yet unborn, because their pupils have built their techniques into updated marketing systems. So, it is good that you have marked the passing of this great and significant man.

  8. Oh…I’ve been busy all day and just heard from you about Zig.
I saw him live in Buffalo MANY years ago when I first got involved in MLM. Was so impressed..and so blessed to see was a committed Christian he was as well. Loved all his training an wise sayings. Saddened to hear of his passing, but know he’s with the Lord.
Enen though it’s past midnight…think I’ll read some of the tributes on Facebook.

  9. I have to agree he was a legend….and I had the pleasure to see him muliple times. He leaves the world with an impact and a positive at that….He lived life to its fullest…GOD bless him his family and America!!

  10. Thank You Charlie,
What was not to love about Zig? I was just cracking up over his “Stinkin Thinkin!” video a couple of days ago! I “was introduced” to Zig Ziglar when I was a teenager. He spoke at an Amway convention my parents took me to in the mid 70’s. He ‘converted’ me to the power of positive thinking and I will ever be thankful to him! He was a consummate leader, teacher and entertainer!

I join my thoughts with yours that Zig is ‘crackin-up the host of heaven’ at this very moment! We were blessed to have known him and the heavens are rejoicing as they welcome a dear son home.

    With love,
    Deaunna Evans, MCC

  11. Wonderful post, Charlie, thank you. I felt like I lost my grandpa today. How do you put into words a man that lived what he spoke? Choked up – Zig is better off for it, but this world lost one of its great members. Especially the business world.

  12. When I listened to Zig Ziglar on a cassette 28 years ago I really got it and closed deals like there was no tomorrow! Listening to Zig was really inspiring!

Thanks Charlie for the tribute to Zig!

  13. I have listened to many audios by Zig he was truly a visionary and inspiration to not only ten’s of millions but to me as well. He has certainly lived by one of his many theories that if we first help other get what they want you will get what you want also. Such was the measure of the man who lived a life full of service to others. Truly and example we all could live by. Despite what is going on the world is certainly a better place having been blessed by his presence and wisdom.

    Hi Charlie,
Zig Ziglar was a man of wisdom who inspired millions of people around the globe with his motivation presentations. The last DVD I bought “See You At The Top” impacted on my life and this will leave LIVE memories of him in my heart. Let his soul rest in internal peace

  15. We will certainly miss Zig Ziglar but some legends will never die and Zig is one of those that will live on forever. He has influenced so many!

  16. Sheryl Dieatrick

Well Charlie, I believe you have it all to cover informationa nd aspects of Zig Ziglar. I have and will continue to treasure his tapes.

Spread Your Wings and Fly High Zig!

  17. Hi Charlie,
My Father introduced me to Zig Ziglar’s work in the early 1980’s. He had met Mr Ziglar several times at different meetings and seminars and was impressed with not only His sales message but His wisdom in approaching life itself. When I saw the news this morning of His passing my initial feelings were sadness and loss. However as I was on His Facebook page I saw right next to the announcement what I consider on of Zig Ziglar’s most profound sayings. It is not how you start this life but how you finish it that matters. I believe you could say of Mr Ziglar that He fought the good fight, finished the course and is now receiving the rewards He so richly deserves I will still feel sadness at His passing but I am also grateful for the fine example He has left us to follow.

      1. Thanks Charlie for letting us know about Zig going home! I just finished listening to one of his tapes. Great Leader!

  18. My first Zig Ziglar was a tape series called “See You At The Top”, probably 20+ years ago. I admired his people skills and his selling skills, and came to admire the “whole” man as I continued to learn from him.

  19. Hi Charlie,
I have Zig Ziglar to thank for waking me up to the understanding of a Positive Mental Attitude. I had never given the concept a thought before his first Arena type Seminar appearance back in about 1965! I will never forget his first book that I purchased, “See You At The Top!” What a time in my life, I was totally changed from the inside!
May Almighty God Cause Rest & Peace to Zig Ziglar and his family!

  20. I can’t help but notice that Zig Ziglar was born in November and died in November. I get the feeling that this was a purposeful life indeed. It’s clear there was a higher designer behind this. It’s almost like he had a mission, he’s accomplished it and now he has ascended triumphantly into the eternal heavens. It was a life well lived indeed.

  21. Charlie,
Having been interested in personal development since the mid-1970’s I have to agree with you – Zig is the Trainer’s Trainer. Anybody who is ‘Anybody’ in personal development can give a great deal of credit for their own growth to Zig.
As for us ‘regular’ folks, I can’t emphasize this enough – if you have the chance to read or listen to ANYTHING by Zig Ziglar, your life will be enhanced and blessed beyond measure. His example has had a profound effect on my life, too!
    All the best from Toronto,

  22. Ecclesiastes 12
……….. the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

    thanks bro.
    What can I SAY?
I heard a lot about him but never really got to meet him either.
Did not even know that he is a christian man.

  23. Charlie, Thanks for the heads up on Zig’s passing. As an Army Recruiter we read his books and watched his video’s. Much of my success as an Army Recruiter is credited to Zig’s training. I use what I was taught in the Army at the Post Office and after December 31, 2012, I will take the training into retirement. I’m going to be so busy working my own business, it will seem like I’m still in the Army and the Post Office. The only difference is that I get to choose if I want a day off, or if I want to go on a trip. I only have to ask my wife, and she has never refused a vacation yet.

  24. Yes I also received the same email Charlie…and truly a loss for us who are left behind…but he has many words of instruction and wisdom for us to learn and go from….
May we as Zig, all choose to live our lives in such a way, that it would inspire our fellow man to reach higher and look beyond our small (so called) problems,,,

  25. Zig Ziglar was an inspiration to millions.
He provided the vision to dream, the tactics to succeed, and a sense of purpose in virtually anyone who read his works or listened to his teachings.
His contributions to the world will endure.

  26. Along with Jim Rohn, Zig was the first self development and sales genius that I met. I went to one of their seminars in Sacramento, CA way back in the mid 80’s.

What a gifted speaker and positive influence he was on this earth. He will be missed but his legacy will live for many years to come. I wish his family well and mourn with them.

    Thanks for sharing, Charlie.

  27. This past Monday, my wife and I went to a social event with another couple, where we were introduced to a great group of people we had never met. At one point, one of the other wives asked outloud to no one in particular, “in this crazy world today, how the heck are you suppose to get ahead, never my get by?”. I immediately, without hesitation, said outloud “help as many other people get what they want and you’ll get exactly what you want”. That of course is Zig, (paraphrased a bit) and my very favorite Zig Ziglar quote. Ever since I came across Zig and that quote, I’ve tried to live my life and run my business by that quote. Like you Charlie, I never met Zig but considered him one of my mentors. The world has lost a great one today but is a much better world because of Zig Ziglar.

It’s so sad to see him go….but this I’m sure that his legacy will live on forever. Although just like you Charlie, I didn’t meet him in person, I have his books in our library – I feel like I know him.
The Bible clearly states that, “Absent from the body, present in the Lord.” Heaven is rejoicing while the world mourns for Zig Ziglar.

  29. I have never actually enrolled in any of his programs but have known of Zig since the ’70s and have had the privilege on catching some of his seminars and always went away with gains of insight and inspiration. It is sad for all of us that he has passed because his inspiration was unmatched and to me a security blanket for the times that I would be down. I could listen to him all day.

  30. Hello Charlie, Thanks for letting me know, and yes this is a great loss for everyone, though like most people, I never met him, but I was aware of him since the late 70’s. The only good out of all of this, is the fact that he is with Jesus NOW !

  31. Hi Charlie, it is always sad to see someone pass away. I remember listening to Ziglar on tape or CD in the car. He was very motivational.

Perhaps he is in a better place.

  32. Thank you. for this wonderful tribute to Zig Ziglar, I too have read, and followed his teachings, had the opportunity to see him speak once, his love for what he did and desire to share were second to none. My thoughts and prayers go out to his Family.

  33. I too am a great fan and follower of Mr. Ziglar. My first introduction to him was from one his cassette tapes I bought in 1984. I have been listening to him ever since only now it is from Audible.com He has always been one of my favorite teachers and motivators. Although, I never had the opportunity to hear him speak in person. I can listen to his teachings and wisdom every day.
What a great man. He will be missed.

  34. Hey Charlie,
Everything well said! I have been studying this great man’s work since I was a kid. I have learned many valuable things from him. He and his work will be missed by millions, he has surely inspired countless people!

  35. I had the HONOR of seeing & listening to Zig TWICE in my early 20’s.
You never saw him without a smile on his face which was simply the outward manifestation of a spirit FILLED with Joy!!! He will be dearly missed by Millions, but his legacy will live on for Many generations through his Many recordings & books.
“You can have everything in life that you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” -Zig

  36. It would be wonderful if we all had the ability and the want to have the affect on as many people as this man had. Fortunately he left a lot behind so that we can still learn from him, and for many of us whose lives he enriched while alive, there will be that many more whose lives he will enrich even though he is no longer here. Paul

    1. I agree. This is why it’s so important to share the special knowledge and experience we have in a durable way. I am SO glad he wrote books and made tapes. His light will never be extinguished.

  37. Hi Charlie,
i never had the chance to meet Zig in personal, but i read a lot about and from him. A great person passed away …
Maybe his thoughts and ideas will stay in our brains …
All the best to his family and friends!

  38. Thx Charlie,

Zig had an impact on millions in a very great way. As a Business Coach, I find myself quoting Zip every week. The one I seem to go back to the most is,
“If you help enough people get what they want, you’ll get what you want”.

He had a servant’s heart, following what our Lord and Savior wants us all to do.

  39. I am very sad to hear this, I heard Zig at a Sales Conference in Birmingham, AL back in the ’90’s. Actually road up the elevator with him and “The Red-Head”, both were very friendly and very real people who took time to actually talk to their fans.

I bought and listened to most of his tapes, and his term “You can get everything you want by helping others get what they want” is a saying that I still remember today.

Our prayers are with the family, thanks Charlie for this tribute to a hero to all of us in the marketing industry.

  40. Hello Charlie
Thank you for sharing this information it is important, I read and listened several of his audio books, I liked a lot, part of his teachings are now part of my philosophy.
    Old school, great motivational guy.
What to say: Zig-Ziglar rest in peace.

  41. this is far too sad to imagine.

we need more modern day cornerstones of higher though and healthy strategic creation. this is a very sad loss

    1. I’m sad too but don’t be too sad. Zig is in a better place and his teachings are still available. Although there will never be another Zig, his son Tom carries on the family tradition and is a wonderful teacher.

  42. Charlie… Am an old timer too, and years ago founded a very successful Real Estate Office. Thanks to Zig Ziglar and a fellow named Tommy Thompson we grew and prospered. About five years ago, I bought more Zig Ziglar CD’s. That time it was for my daughter who was just getting started. Thank you for posting and writing about this.

I am brand new to your site as of yesterday, and today am even more sure than yesterday what a good decision I had made.

    1. Welcome Judy. I’m happy you are here. Us old timers need to stick together! 🙂

I did the same thing with my two daughters – they have heard lots of Zig and even more of me quoting Zig throughout the day.

  43. A great man has left us today, but there is no doubt where he has gone. He will be sorely missed by myself and millions of others that have followed him and his motivational teachings.

    1. He is happy and dancing, and probably teaching, right now. I know his family are all believers and are sad but tempered by the knowledge that Zig is well, happy and exactly where he needs to be, with the Lord.

  44. Thanks Charlie for the great article. I’ve been a Zig fan for over 30 years and don’t believe a better motivator has ever lived. One of my favorite Zig Ziglar quotes is “You can have everything in life that you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
He will certainly be missed. Heaven is a much better place today with him in it.

  45. People like Zig Ziglar have helped the world stay positive no matter what…He was one of the grandfathers of personal development…I’m sure his work will keep influencing tons and tons of people around the globe.

  46. Thank you, Charlie, for this heartfelt tribute to Zig.
And since there is nothing better left to say than
you have said, I will leave you with a great quote
    from our hero:

“Ambition, fueled by compassion, wisdom and integrity, is a powerful force for good that will turn the wheels of industry and open the doors of opportunity for you and countless others.”

  47. Hi Charlie,
I have to be honest, I’d never actually heard of Zig Ziglar until today when my FB wall became FULL of mentions of his name.
It seems that while I did know of him while he lived, his “legacy” means that I am going to look into his teachings and trainings. I’m sure this will be true of many people today.
    Take care,

    1. I was a Realtor back in the 1970 s.
went to 3 of his seminars, have his tapes , they are the tops, still listen to them, in my car.
Thank you Charlie for the E Mail..
