It’s Thursday and I feel completely overwhelmed

"I feel completely overwhelmed!"

It was a normal Thursday when he wrote it. He had been trying to make money online for over 8 years.

Yes ... YEARS.

If you named a program it seemed like he had tried it. After a while, the names all started to sound the same.

And now, the money was gone.

His wife was upset. She did not share the dream he had of making a living online.

Not millions. Not driving a Rolls Royce. Just making a good living doing something online.

I knew I needed to help him. But how could I best do that?

Sure, I know made a full time living online for over 16 years. And yes, I own a bunch of membership sites and we do well.

But how could that help him in his current situation?

So I went back in time to a time when I had a big dream and $17 in the bank.

Yes, $17 in the bank and nothing scheduled to come in.

And, a wife and two children at home. I was the sole breadwinner and I let us get down to $17!

No pressure (or guilt) there, right?

I took some time to pray and think about how to advise my new friend. To be candid, it was a challenge.

Here is what I told him.

Do something you love

If you have to force yourself to do what you need to do to succeed your willpower will eventually fail.

It may sound negative but it's true.

When we work at something we love our work calls to us. It pulls us in to a world where passion and commerce can meet.

I am typing this in my PJs because this idea came to me minutes ago and I simply want to share.

That is the beauty of content marketing.

While this post might not be the usual "5 ways to ..." blog post, there is someone who needs to hear this.

After a dozen years of blogging, I know that to be true.

But what if what you love is coffee?

Then find a way to make a living from loving coffee! It can be done. That has been proven a thousand times over.

Create a blog about coffee and monetize it with ads from Outbrain or another source.

I'm teaching a client to do just that even now.

Here are three key questions.

  1. What do you love?
  2. Will you commit to share knowledge about it?
  3. How can you make money from it?

Believe me when I tell you this - answering those three questions can be the key to your turnaround.

Do something you understand

If you don't understand how a system works you will continually struggle to make it work for you.

Again, just a fact, not a judgment.

I see people every day who join this club or that business or the other program who have no clue how or why it might work.

But they believe the nice man or lady on the video. The site looks exciting. It makes big promises. And it's free to join.

Here is what they don't usually consider.

You can never get back the time you lose chasing a shiny object that just will not work for you.

Three questions I ask consulting clients are ...

  • "How long have you been trying to make money online?"
  • "How many articles would you have if you had written only two articles per week during that time?"
  • "Can a blog with that number of articles actually make money?"

I usually have to answer the third question for them.

And they are almost always very surprised to learn how easy it is to make money with a well-structured blog.

So here's the point.

No matter what you choose, be it content marketing, creating products, being a coach ... no matter what it is ... make sure you understand it before you invest your most precious commodity ... your time.

Do something that is proven

One huge mistake people make is going for the "latest and greatest" thing on the market BEFORE they do what is proven.

Before they have a foundation of success on which to build!

Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of doing new things. At some point all ideas were new. I get that.

For example, right now I am testing the effectiveness of chatbots in marketing.

It's fun! And I believe it will be very profitable.

BUT ... and it's a big but ... I am doing this from a place of owning a very successful business.

And there is the mistake so many make.

One good example is a new friend who owns 4 blogs but has 0 people on his mailing list.

Why would you choose that when email marketing is proven to be so effective?

His answer was time, and I totally get that.

So we talked and now he is building his list, wishing he had started sooner.

Here's what I told him "Forget the pass and press on to the new future you want."

Good advice for us all I think.

Find someone you trust

The old saying goes "no man is an island" and it's true. [No woman is either]

We live in an interdependent world, like it or not.

One of the best salesmen I ever knew used to tell his prospects this ... "You are going to trust someone so tell me what I need to do so you choose me."

The more you analyze that, the better it becomes. Great salesmanship.

The fact is, when starting out with any new idea we need someone we trust who can help us.

When I was starting out a great American named Paul gave of his time to answer my questions.

As I look back, it seems we spent a total of about 2 hours together.

Doesn't seem like that much, right?

But at the time I needed it what he did made all the difference.

He told me then to not pay him but to pay it forward.

I'm still doing that every day.

That's why I answer emails, support tickets, and provide so much free information on my blog.

Find a mentor. Stay close to him or her and take their advice.

Take action on what they suggest.

They can not only point you in the right direction but they can help you avoid the pitfalls as well.

And those are beautiful things indeed!

Give yourself time

The truth about success is this, it takes time.

Do people go from $0 to $100,000 in 90 days?

Yes, it can happen.

But for every one that does get there you will find thousands of broken dreams and broken lives.

Much like winning the lottery, the odds are not on your side if you want to go from making no money to making big money quickly.

Notice the emphasis on quickly.

Does that mean you should give up your dream?

What is does mean is this - you must mix passion with a plan.

A plan that is provided by someone who has "been there and done that".

A plan that meets these criteria.

  • It is based on proven principles.
  • It is filtered through the lens of experience.
  • It is tailored to fit you, your goals, passions, and resources.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, or ever have, take time to read this article again. You can even print it out.

See if you agree with what I am sharing.

If you do, and you want some help, leave a comment and let me know.

I will do my very best to answer you and be of help.

You see Paul, I'm still paying it forward like you asked. 🙂

Thanks for reading.
